The film peaks during the tense final walk to the train (9.2) but drops significantly in the controversial ending (6.1), a swing of 3.1 points.
The film maintains strong audience approval throughout most of its runtime, with particular praise for the performances of Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and scene-stealer Ben Foster. The sentiment peaks during the expertly crafted action sequences and character moments in the final act, but takes a notable dip in the controversial ending which divided critics on its believability. Despite some plot hole criticisms, most reviewers found it an engaging, well-acted western that successfully updated the classic genre.
