Critics found the film to be a mixed effort that started poorly with an unnecessarily violent opening but built effectively toward genuine scares in the middle act. While praising del Toro's atmospheric Gothic production design and Bailee Madison's strong performance, most felt the film was undermined by poor CGI creatures, predictable plotting, and weak adult performances that prevented it from reaching the heights of the original.
