The film swings from its peak around the Lester Billings visit and early creature-teasing sequences (scores 7.5-7.8) down to its weakest stretch in the Rita trap and creature-kills-Rita section (score 5.2), a drop of roughly 2.6 points as overexposure of the monster and irrational character behavior eroded the tension built in the first half.
The Boogeyman opens with genuine dread and strong early momentum, buoyed by David Dastmalchian's memorable cameo, Rob Savage's restrained creature-teasing direction, and effective sound design that reviewers consistently praised. The middle act holds reasonably well on atmosphere and performance, particularly from Sophie Thatcher, but the second half loses steam as the creature becomes overexposed, character logic frays, and the plot mechanics feel increasingly generic. The film lands as a competent, atmospherically solid but ultimately forgettable mid-tier horror entry that satisfies in the moment without leaving a lasting impression.
