Nacho Libre
Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery, can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnación.
Critics Sentiment
Ignacio climbs a cliff to eat a raw eagle egg for strength
Ignacio is banished from the monastery and goes to live in exile
The film peaks with the absurd eagle egg sequence that critics universally praised, then gradually declines through a dragging third act that many found overlong and predictable.
Critics were divided on Nacho Libre, with many appreciating Jack Black's committed performance and specific comedic sequences like the eagle egg quest, but finding the overall execution uneven. The film starts modestly, builds to genuinely funny moments in its middle section, then loses momentum in a third act that reviewers consistently described as overlong and predictable. While some praised its heart and family-friendly message, others found it lacking in consistent laughs and story coherence.
