Airplane II: The Sequel
A faulty computer causes a passenger space shuttle to head straight for the sun, and man-with-a-past Ted Striker must save the day and get the shuttle back on track – again – all the while trying to patch up his relationship with Elaine.
Critics Sentiment
Opening sequence with hit and run gags and visual comedy
Simon Kurtz abandons Elaine and escapes in sole escape pod
Film drops from promising opening at 7.5 to its lowest point at 5.0 during the middle act, then recovers with Shatner's appearance bringing it back up to 7.2
Airplane II starts promisingly with effective opening gags that had critics optimistic, but sags significantly in the middle portions where recycled jokes and retreaded plot points caused reviewer fatigue. The film recovers somewhat in the final act, particularly with William Shatner's widely praised performance, though it never quite recaptures the brilliance of its predecessor.
