Rising Sun
When a prostitute is found dead in a Los Angeles skyscraper occupied by a large Japanese corporation, detectives John Connor and Web Smith are called in to investigate. Although Connor has previous experience working in Japan, cultural differences make their progress difficult until a security disc showing the murder turns up. Close scrutiny proves the disc has been doctored, and the detectives realize they're dealing with a cover-up as well.

Web Smith teams up with Japanese expert John Connor
Jingo suggests Richmond may not have been the real murderer after all
The film drops significantly from the strong Sakamura alive revelation to the weak final act, falling from 7.5 to 5.1 as the resolution disappoints.
Rising Sun starts promisingly with Connery and Snipes' partnership driving strong early reception, but gradually loses steam as plot complications mount. The investigation elements and cultural dynamics work well in the middle sections, but the film stumbles badly in its final act with a predictable killer reveal and unsatisfying ambiguous ending that left many reviewers frustrated.
