Runner Runner starts with modest promise in its Social Network-style setup and benefits from attractive Costa Rican locations and Affleck's better-than-usual performance as the villain. However, the film steadily declines into generic, predictable crime thriller territory with wooden acting, lack of chemistry between leads, and a plot that critics universally found boring and derivative. Despite a few entertaining moments in the middle act, the overall sentiment remains disappointingly mediocre.
